The Bloodgood Sycamore is a large, stately tree valuable for its ability to grow in difficult locations. This selected form of the London Plane Tree has very large, glossy leaves looking a little like maple leaves, clusters of rounds fruits in winter, and very attractive mottled bark colored cream, green, tan, brown and gray. In time it will exceed 50 feet in height, with a spread of more than 25 feet, and old trees may be much larger. This tree is renowned for its ability to thrive in difficult soil conditions, and it has been selected for resistance to diseases, so it is far superior to more common forms. Plant this tree as a specimen in a large lawn, as a background tree on your property, as a screen, or along streams and lakes. Wherever you have difficult soil and need an attractive tree, this one is the top choice.

  • Best large tree for tough urban conditions
  • Selected for high resistance to diseases
  • Attractive very large glossy leaves
  • Ever-changing bark colors and patterns
  • Grows in any soil and drainage

Plant the Bloodgood Sycamore in full sun, in any soil. It will grow in soils from sand to clay, and acid or alkaline. It survives both dry soil and drought, once established, and grows well in poorly-drained and flooded soils too. Compacted soil and harsh urban conditions, including air pollution, are resisted, and this vigorous hybrid tree will survive in places where almost all other trees will fail. It is resistant to leaf blight, anthracnose and twig canker, and it can be allowed to grow naturally, or trimmed regularly to create a more compact form.
